The facility houses 742 meters of deep-sea geological core samples recovered from the Antarctic continent and peri-antarctic areas.

Facility services include:

• curation of the exisiting collection;
• receipt and x-ray processing of new cores;
• core description and publication of core descriptions;
• distribution of samples from the collection to authorized investigators

The building that houses the Sorting Centre of the National Museum of Antarctica is designed for the storage and processing of marine geological core samples. Once the cores reach the facility they are x-ray processed, described, and then stored in the refrigerated vault.

Samples from the collection are then distributed to investigators worldwide upon request.

In addition to the space necessary for these basic tasks, the facility houses a variety of equipment to enable visiting investigators to carry out additional analyses on the cores. This equipment includes:

1. Leica MZ125 high-performance stereomicroscope with digital camcorder;
2. Digital and analog core photography;
3. Fume hoods;
4. Standard sediment processing facilities
