"METEORITE SEARCH IN ANTARTICA"

Antarctica is an extraordinary place for the search of meteorites for three reason:

  • the dark fusion crusted extraterrestrial extraterrestrial stones are easily spotted on the ice surfer;
  • the cold arid climate preserves meteorites up to 1 million years;
  • meteorites fallen on the vast antarctic plateau in the last million years are concentrated, by ice dynamics, in small blue ice field called "meteorites traps".

The Museo has produced two versions of the video which documents the Italian meteorite search activity in Antarctica since 1990.
The first version shows the life of researchers in a remote camp at Frontier Mountain and the search activites. In the second version, updated with images of the 1999/2000 campaign, emphasis is given on the explanation of the mechanisms that causes the concentration of meteorites of blu ice areas.
